How to tailor an account manager resume to the job

Account manager posts are about keeping and growing customers. They want to know how many accounts, how much revenue, and what happened to it under you.

What account manager posts usually ask for

Not every post asks for all of these, and the order changes. Check which ones the post you're applying to lists first or repeats.

  • Book of business. Number of accounts and the revenue they represent.
  • Retention and renewals. Your renewal rate, if you have one.
  • Upsell and expansion. Revenue grown within existing accounts.
  • Relationships. Who you worked with on the customer side, by role.
  • Working with sales and support. How you handed off or escalated.

What to put first

Lead with your book of business and what you did with it: retained, grew or turned around.

A tailored line, before and after

Before: Managed a portfolio of client accounts. Handled renewals and upsells. Built good relationships.

After: Managed 45 mid-market accounts worth $3.1M a year, renewing 94% and adding $420K in upsells.

The account count, revenue and renewal rate were in the person's original resume under "achievements". The rewrite moves them into the job line where a reader expects them. This is an invented example.

Gaps, and how to handle them honestly

  • A sales quota. If you didn't carry one, say what you were measured on instead.
  • Enterprise accounts. If your accounts were smaller, describe their complexity rather than their size.

Posts often list more than the job needs. If you clearly show most of the main requirements, it's usually worth applying.

Wording that often appears in these posts

Use these where they describe what you've actually done, in sentences about that work. A list of terms you can't back up reads badly to recruiters, and they ask about every line in an interview.

Tailor yours to a real post

Paste the post you're applying to, and cvagent.ai lists what it asks for, marks which of those your resume shows, and rewrites your resume for it using only what's in your resume. Every change is shown next to your original, and anything it can't trace back to your resume is flagged. Or start with the free resume check, which needs no account and saves nothing.
