How to tailor a sales representative resume to the job
Sales posts are blunt about what they want: a quota, the kind of customer, the kind of sale. Your resume should answer with numbers in the same terms.
What sales representative posts usually ask for
Not every post asks for all of these, and the order changes. Check which ones the post you're applying to lists first or repeats.
- Quota attainment. Your percentage of quota, and over what period.
- The type of sale. Inbound or outbound, transactional or long-cycle, SMB or enterprise.
- Prospecting. Calls, emails, meetings booked. A weekly or monthly number.
- CRM. Salesforce or HubSpot, usually. Name the one you use.
- Deal size or revenue. Average deal or total closed.
What to put first
Lead with your quota attainment in the sale most like theirs. If the post is outbound SMB and your best year was enterprise renewals, say both, in that order.
A tailored line, before and after
Before: Sold software to small businesses. Hit my targets. Used Salesforce.
After: Closed $640K in new small-business software deals in 2025, 118% of quota, managing the pipeline in Salesforce.
The revenue and quota figure were in the person's performance review, which they added as a line on their resume. The rewrite turns "hit my targets" into the number. This is an invented example.
Gaps, and how to handle them honestly
- Industry experience. If you've sold something else, say what's similar: buyer, price, sales cycle.
- Closing as opposed to booking meetings. If you were an SDR, say what you booked and what it turned into. Don't call it closing.
Posts often list more than the job needs. If you clearly show most of the main requirements, it's usually worth applying.
Wording that often appears in these posts
Use these where they describe what you've actually done, in sentences about that work. A list of terms you can't back up reads badly to recruiters, and they ask about every line in an interview.

Tailor yours to a real post
Paste the post you're applying to, and cvagent.ai lists what it asks for, marks which of those your resume shows, and rewrites your resume for it using only what's in your resume. Every change is shown next to your original, and anything it can't trace back to your resume is flagged. Or start with the free resume check, which needs no account and saves nothing.
