How to tailor a content writer resume to the job

Content writing posts care about the kind of writing, the subject and the volume. A good resume for one reads like a list of what was published and what it did.

What content writer posts usually ask for

Not every post asks for all of these, and the order changes. Check which ones the post you're applying to lists first or repeats.

  • Types of writing. Blog posts, guides, product pages, email, scripts. Posts usually name the main one.
  • Subject knowledge. If the post is for a technical, health or finance audience, show you've written for one.
  • SEO. Keyword research, briefs, optimizing existing content.
  • Editing and process. Working to briefs, style guides, deadlines.
  • Results. Traffic, rankings, sign-ups, whatever your work was measured on.

What to put first

Lead with writing on the closest subject to theirs, and link to two or three pieces in your contact line.

A tailored line, before and after

Before: Wrote blog posts for a software company. Did SEO. Posts got a lot of traffic.

After: Wrote 60 SEO blog posts for a B2B software company; the top ten brought in 35% of the site's organic traffic.

The post count and traffic share were in the person's notes. "A lot of traffic" is replaced with the figure, and "B2B" is there because the post asked for it. This is an invented example.

Gaps, and how to handle them honestly

  • A specialist subject. If you haven't written about it, show the closest subject and how quickly you learned it.
  • Video or podcast scripts. If you haven't written them, leave them out.

Posts often list more than the job needs. If you clearly show most of the main requirements, it's usually worth applying.

Wording that often appears in these posts

Use these where they describe what you've actually done, in sentences about that work. A list of terms you can't back up reads badly to recruiters, and they ask about every line in an interview.

Tailor yours to a real post

Paste the post you're applying to, and cvagent.ai lists what it asks for, marks which of those your resume shows, and rewrites your resume for it using only what's in your resume. Every change is shown next to your original, and anything it can't trace back to your resume is flagged. Or start with the free resume check, which needs no account and saves nothing.
