How to tailor a social media manager resume to the job

Social media posts ask for platforms, content, community and numbers. Many resumes list platforms and skip the numbers, which is the part a hiring manager remembers.

What social media manager posts usually ask for

Not every post asks for all of these, and the order changes. Check which ones the post you're applying to lists first or repeats.

  • Platforms. Name the ones you ran, and the ones the post names if you've used them.
  • Content creation. Writing, short video, design. Say what you made yourself.
  • Community management. Replies, moderation, customer issues.
  • Analytics and reporting. Reach, engagement, follower growth, traffic, sales.
  • Paid social. Some posts include it. If you've run ads, say how much budget.

What to put first

Lead with the account most like theirs, with a growth or engagement number over a period you can name.

A tailored line, before and after

Before: Ran the company's Instagram and TikTok. Created content and replied to comments. Grew followers.

After: Ran Instagram and TikTok for a regional retailer, growing followers from 8K to 41K in 14 months with content I filmed and edited.

The follower counts and timeframe came from the person's own reporting, which they added. The rewrite also says they made the content, which the post asked about. This is an invented example.

Gaps, and how to handle them honestly

  • A platform you haven't used for work. Personal use doesn't count as experience; leave it as a gap or mention it lightly in skills.
  • Paid social. If you haven't run ads, don't imply it.

Posts often list more than the job needs. If you clearly show most of the main requirements, it's usually worth applying.

Wording that often appears in these posts

Use these where they describe what you've actually done, in sentences about that work. A list of terms you can't back up reads badly to recruiters, and they ask about every line in an interview.

Tailor yours to a real post

Paste the post you're applying to, and cvagent.ai lists what it asks for, marks which of those your resume shows, and rewrites your resume for it using only what's in your resume. Every change is shown next to your original, and anything it can't trace back to your resume is flagged. Or start with the free resume check, which needs no account and saves nothing.
